Ganesh chaturthi is nearby and every year i make these modak to lord ganesha , modaks are made especially maharastians and they offer this prasad as a must to lord Ganesha. I usually make undrallu,guggillu,kudumulu to lord but these modaks are also favorite to the lord so along with all these I make modaks
these are steamed rice dumplings usually made stuffing with chana dal and jaggery but some people also makes stuffing with coconut,khoya or with dry fruits but here i made this traditional type for this time.
Rice Flour – 1 cup
Hot water – 1 cup
Salt – 1 tspn
Oil – 1 tspn
For the stuffing:-
Jaggery – 1/2 cup
Fresh grated coconut – 1/4 cup
Channa dal(cooked and mashed) – 1/2 cup
Cardamom powder – 1/2 tspn
1. Powder jaggery and add a tablespoon of water to the jaggery and place it on medium heat. Wait until jaggery melts. Then filter the jaggery syrup to remove impurities.
2.Add grated coconut and cook for 5 minutes. Then add cooked and mashed channa dal and cook until the mixture turns thick.
3.Add cardamom powder, mix well and remove from heat! .
4.Heat 1 1/4 cup of water. When water starts to boil, add salt and oil.
5.Pour this water very little at a time to the rice flour and keep mixing with a ladle. Once the flour turns into a soft dough, do not add any more water. Wait for a minute and Knead the dough well with your hands while it is slightly warm.
6.Make the modak when the dough is still warm to handle or else the modak will turn out rubbery and hard. Keep the dough covered with cloth and keep aside for few minutes .
7.Place the stuffing inside the mold and cover it dough and press the mold and seal the edges and take outside and repeat all the process with remaining dough and make modaks and steam for 10 minutes in a steamer .
8. Offer this modak as a prasad to lord ganesha for this festival.
