Vinayaka chavithi is nearby and without  modaks  its incomplete and we make modaks compulsory on vinayaka  chavithi .  Since from my childhood  we celebrate ganesh chaturdhi and we offer pooja and makes all specials which Lord Ganesha likes .

Modaks are made in different types among those this plain modaks are made using chana dal ,coconut and jaggery. These modaks are also called as ukadiche modak in Maharashtra which is meant to be steamed modaks.

Modaks are mainly made with rice flour and as for stuffing we use coconut,jaggery and some chana dal also. But some people makes with plain grated fresh coconut  and jaggery.


For stuffing  :

coconut         : 1 cup {grated}

powdered sugar  : 1/2 cup

chana dal            : 1 tbsp

cardamom powder : 1/4 stp

For outer layer :

Rice flour       : 1 cup

water             : 1 cup

ghee             : 1 tsp


  1. Combine coconut and jaggery in a pan. Add cooked chana dal to this mixture.
  2. Mix well untill all combined together and cook on medium flame.
  3. Stir continuosly until it gets thick mixture.When it gets thicken add cardamom powder and mix well.
  4. Remove from flame and make round balls.
  5. For outer layer add water in a essel when water gets boiled add rice flour and ghee and stir continuosly.
  6. when it forms like a thick dough switch off the flame and make a small ball and put this in modak mould and add cooked coconut mixture and close with rice flour and press the modak mould .
  7. Make the same process for all the modaks and steam for ten to fifteen minutes and steamed modaks are ready .
