Pongal is made with different variants in my state called katte pongal,sweet pongal paala pongal,khara pongal.Among all these sweet pongal is made for makar sakranthi, which is the biggest festival celebrated in Andhra Pradesh.Sankranthi is mainly celebrated on the occasion of harvest of crops . During my childhood I used to went to my grandmothers home tanuku in west Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh . The andhrites celebrates this festival a lot, making sweets, decorating houses with full of flowers, worshipping cows , doing rangoli  with full of colors, flying kites  and so more.


Rice                  : 1/2 cup

moong dal     : 1/8 cup

chana dal       :  2 tbsp

jaggery         : 3/4 cup

water             : 3 cups

ghee               : 3 tbsp

cashews      : 10

raisins         : 10


1.Roast rice and moong dal separately . Roast until raw smell disappear,keep aside.

2.Wash and soak rice for twenty minutes.After twenty minutes cook rice and moong dal mix in a pressure cooker for 4 -5 whitsles.

3.When pressure releases mash well and keep aside.Now dissolve jaggery in water and cook for few minutes untill jaggery dissolves. Add cardamom powder and strain mixture  with a strainer so that no impurities are remained.

4.Add this jaggery syrup to the cooked rice and cook for few minutes again untill all mixed together.Cook for 5 minutes on low flame.

5.Now heat a pan add ghee and roast cashews and raisins on low flame and keep aside.Add this roasted nuts to the pongal and serve hot with ghee.
